Several years ago I used to work in the pharmacy setting and for the longest time I really enjoyed my job. My absolute favorite part of my job was the people who I meet. There were several people who would come in about once a week to get prescriptions filled, and we would chat. I was lucky enough to work for an independent pharmacy, owned by an amazing man who was extremely giving.
There was time when people couldn’t cover their prescriptions and the owner would always work something out with them so nobody went without. I loved my job as a pharmacy tech until I moved and started working at another pharmacy. I still meet tons of great people, but there was one huge difference that really pushed me away – people couldn’t afford their medication. Whether their insurance capped out for the year or they were self-pay, some of those medications are too much, yet they cannot live without them. I still remember the day I went from liking my job to dreading it.
One of our regular customers came in to pick up his blood pressure medication (or something along those lines), when we ran it in the system we found out his insurance capped out and he needed to pay cash. The medication he was on didn’t have a generic yet, he was out of pills and ended up spending his grocery money on FIVE bills! This was one of the sweetest little old men I have ever met. I couldn’t let him spend his grocery money, so I paid for his script, but he didn’t realize until he got home because I put his money back into the bag. Of occurs he came back and tried to return the money, but I wouldn’t take it.
It made me feel good to help him, but it made me upset at the same time. NOBODY SHOULD HAVE TO SPEND THEIR GROCERY MONEY TO BUY PILLS! I tried to enjoy my job after that, but I started noticing every horrible thing about it. A few months went by and I officially hated my job, dreaded getting up and going to work. I found something else and haven’t looked back. Today I’m PROUD to help raise awareness about SIRUM and their plans to help make medication affordable in the USA.
