What Things Make A Vehicle Kidproof?

by Jenn Brockman

It’s funny there are certain things my parents have told me, which went in one ear and out the other, and there are other things I live by, like driving a Chevy/GM vehicle.  I can honestly say I have never owned anything, but a Chevy or GM vehicle.  My dad helped me pay for my first car, which was a GM and all the others I have purchased on my own.  My daddy taught me right what can I say.

The only vehicle my husband and I will own is Chevy or GM.  My father has worked on cars his whole life and my husband has been a mechanic for several years and Chevy/GM is something they both agree on.  Thinking back to the first time when I met my husband, one of the first things he told me was that he was a smart man because he drove a Chevy, lol.

Now that I’m a parent it’s even more important than before to have reliable transportation, that is comfortable for the family, and of course kidproof!  As the family continues to grow, so does our choice of Chevy/GM vehicles.

We’re planning on trading in our Chevy Tahoe for a new Chevy Suburban toward the end of this month or beginning of March.  I’m beyond excited because I love the new Suburbans.  They’re going to be the perfect size for our family to travel comfortably, and even have room for another baby, which my husband and I are planning on trying to have one more.  This means we need more space and the Suburban is more than perfect.  As our family grows we have always trusted Chevy/GM to grow with us and we’ve even been lucky enough to have a mommy and daddy ONLY car.

Chevy CameroOkay, so the Camero is 100% dads, but the beauty of being mom is I can drive it when I like.  My husband’s Chevy Camero is his baby and our mommy and daddy out-of-town car.  It’s nice because we go on mom and dad only vacations twice a year and when we drive we drive in style and save money on gas, it’s a win-win!

I am currently driving the Tahoe, which is by far the nicest vehicle I’ve owned, but my personal favorite is my old blue Silverado.  It’s not only comfortable but filled with memories.  My youngest daughter picked it out for me when she was two years old and we’re still heartbroken that I traded it in.  I so wish we still had that blue Chevy Silverado sitting in our driveway.  Isn’t it crazy how we can get so attached to our vehicles.  We name ours, do you name your vehicles?

We’re also rebuilding my dad’s old  Chevy.  My husband is doing all the work himself and my dad is going to paint it.  Gosh, I can’t tell you how exciting it is going to be to have that baby on the road again!  I’m almost going to bet my brother and I cry because we have been trying to rebuild it for years and we have so many awesome childhood memories in that truck.  From finding Christmas trees every year to going 4-wheeling after it rained that old Chevy truck is a huge part of my childhood.  One day I’ll share pictures of it with you, but I want to wait until it’s done because it’s going to be beautiful.   Once we have it running, I can tell you for sure, if I don’t have kids with me I’ll be cursing my daddy’s old pick up!

Chevy SilveradoMy husband and I made a deal, once we are able, mommy is going back to a truck.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the Tahoe and am thrilled about the Suburban, but I was born and raised to drive a Chevy truck.  It gives me something to look forward to when I’m depressed because the kids are getting older, right!   However, I’m super excited about getting a new Suburban! Not only is it going to be perfect for me, it’s going to have plenty of room for the whole family, with room to spare for another baby!  I’m thrilled about the suburban and talking about it makes me even more excited that we’re planning for another baby!

I have never thought about it, but Chevy/GM has grown with us.  When I met my husband, I drove an older Chevy truck.  After we were married we bought a Chevy Blazer later, on to the Chevy Silverado, my husband’s Chevy Camero, two years ago the Chevy Tahoe, and in the next few weeks we’re going to be sporting the Chevy Suburban.  Then as the kids grow up and move out we’ll begin to downsize again and you’ll find me driving a Chevy truck, no bones about it.
What Makes A Vehicle Kidproof

What Makes a Vehicle Kidproof?

With four children and planning another we not only need something comfortable, but something kidproof too.  There are a lot of things that make a vehicle kidproof for me, like:

CUP HOLDERS EVERYWHERE – With four children, I need serious cup holders, or bad things will happen.  Thankfully, all of our Chevy’s have plenty of cup holders.  Believe it or not, but there are more cup holder than we need, which I’m totally loving because the kids have no excuse to not have their drink in a cup holder, which reduces those spills.  The location and quantity of the cup holders Chevy/GM places in their vehicles are influenced by the needs of kids so they can easily reach them, and securely hold drinks in place.

Fabric –   Did you know that GM works with suppliers to make certain vehicles have fabric that are durable and able to resist all sorts of stains.  Which I can defiantly say is TRUE!  We’ve seen some pretty nasty spills and I’ve always wished the carpet in my house was as durable, lol.

Plastic on the back of seats – OMG, so those little kids feet that I’m constantly telling to stay off the back of my seat because it drives me nuts.  Well, thank goodness that Chevy/GM has plastic backing on vehicle seats!  Did you know this is one of the seven aspects of a vehicle that consumers might not know was designed with kids kicking, fighting, and spilling in mind.

Made With Kids In Mind – The designers and engineers for GM/Chevy are inspired by the actions of their children.  They want to make features within the vehicle “kidproof”, which as a mother with four children I say THANK YOU!

My daughters idea of the car being kidproof is totally different than mine, but it does mean a lot to her too.

Mattie and I had a blast making the videos and I just have to include the whole thing too! She’s so smart, funny, and she really loves our Chevy Tahoe! If you have a few minutes check the whole video of little Mattie and what she thinks about our car being kidproof.
