How to Develop Healthy Sleeping Habits with Day Light Savings

by Jenn Brockman

How are your sleeping habits?  If your sleeping habits are anything like mine, you probably wish there was more time in the day so you could find time to sleep.  I need to develop healthy sleeping habits because I’m sick of feeling sluggish, moody, and unmotivated.  Since, its almost that time of year again – Daylight Savings Time its the perfect time to hit the reset button, make a commitment to myself, and develop healthy sleeping habits.

With Daylight Savings, we’re supposed to get an extra hour sleep, but I never do.  I tend to try and get more things done before bed, which normally puts me to bed later than planned.

I know a lot of people who look forward to the clocks “falling back” because they think they get an extra hour sleep.  Maybe some do, but it’s also easy to let the extra time get the best of you.  Establishing healthy sleeping habits are important for your mind, body, soul, and that little internal clock that you just reset.

  • Reset, and develop healthy sleeping habits with Daylight Savings – It’s the perfect time to stop coming up with excuses, and start by hitting the reset button.  Making changes are easier for me, when there is a fresh start.
  • Prepare for the upcoming time change– If you have children preparing can make your life less stressful.  I don’t know anyone who likes waking up at 5 and not 6, or 4 and not five because the kids internal clocks are all out of whack.  Oh, and since they didn’t hear you tell them about the time change, they have 987 questions at 4:07 am that you’re supposed to have answers too.  Rather than have the kids up running around try your best to prepare for the time change.  You can do this by changing their daily activities slowly a week in advanced.  It worked great with my youngest daughter last year; I slowly moved everything, and when it was time to set the clocks she wants on that schedule, which made my life easier.
  • Make a commitment to yourself, and write it down – Make a commitment to yourself to go to bed at the same time (regardless of the time difference) so you’ll get to use the extra hour.  I’m guilty of using the extra hour that comes with the time chance of everything but sleeping, LOL.   Be committed, and write your commitment down.
  • Ask your family to join you – Okay, maybe not the kids, but your spouse and other adults in the house.  It’s hard for me to go to bed without my husband, so he agreed to do it with me going forward,
  • Make the kids bedrooms dark – You might not get extra sleep if you don’t do something to help the children sleep for that extra hour.  I’ve found making the room dark, and not letting early morning light shine in works best for my kids.
  • Unplug – Just turn it all off.  Everything will be there for you in the morning.
  • Watch what you’re drinking – Pay attention to how much alcohol, caffeine and even nicotine you are consuming, because it can impact your ability to fall asleep.
  • Relax with a warm bath or shower – If you’re worried about not feeling sleepy, you can always relax in a nice warm bath, or stand under the nice warm shower.
  • Workout during the day – Get up and do something daily, you’ll not only feel better but sleep better as well.
  • Positive attitude – See the benefits to the time change, and that you’re going to put yourself back on a healthy sleeping pattern, diet, or anything else you wanted to restart.  Thinking positive with only make things easier, more fun, and you’ll be more likely to stick with things.  Plus, you’re setting a great example if you have children
  • Stop thinking and trying to solve the worlds problems at bedtime – Give your mind a breath, stop thinking about everything that happened today, and let it all go.  Bedtime isn’t the time to start thinking about things we have no control over.  If you had a bad day at work, it’s not like stress will fix it.  You need to wait until the morning  – leave work at work and get some sleep.
  • Breathing – I’m going to tell you a little secret, but you can’t tell anyone.  I snore, SUPER loud when I’m sleepy lol.

My husband and I recently took the Breathe Right 3-day challenge and had to unplug and go to bed 1 hour earlier, and yes, I did use the new Breath Right with lavender scent.  I had used Breathe Right strips before and always liked them.  I know my husband likes them was well because he says I snore less when I wear them.

I don’t hear myself snoring, but I do know I’m horrible at making myself stop and go to sleep.  When I do go to sleep, I snore because I am so sleepy, but the past few days has been incredible!  Not only did the Breathe Right strips help me breathe better, but my husband also said I slept less.  I think it’s a combination of not being excused and the Breathe Right strips.  Oh, and a lovely lavender scent that relaxes me.

Let’s face it, sleep has a lot to do with our ability to concentrate, do daily tasks, our mood, and everything else.  As adults, we have so much to get done during the day, finding an hour to go to bed early might not seem possible, but you can do it.  Maybe you dread going to bed because your sleep is affected by nighttime nasal congestion, which is not fun, and can make it impossible to sleep.

Have you tried Breathe Right strips?  They’re great, and millions of people use them to sleep better.  They open your nasal passages helping you breathe better through your nose.  Breathe Right strips can also help with the dreaded stuffy nose, and sleep even better thanks to the added lavender scent.  Don’t let a stuff nos control your sleep habits, use Breathe Right, and get better sleep, great relief, and feel better.

This year, I hope your join me and Breathe Right during Daylight Savings and have an EPIC Nights Sleep.  Breathe Right has it down, they want to make a healthy commitment to unplug, and go to bed an hour early.  Something we can do, and feel good about doing.  Plus, think about how amazing you’re going to feel in the morning.  Join the Breathe Right campaign here.
