You might remember the DIY Kids Work/Play Table project I completed recently. We recently visited our local Dollar General for supplies and have officially finished our DIY kids school/play table organization project. Which is perfect because my kids start their summer learning program Monday.
DIY Kids Work/Play Table Organization Project
We headed to Dollar General for all our Work/Play Table Organization Project supplies.
My kids love visiting Dollar General and Mattie wanted so badly to get some flowers for our organization project lol. Dollar General had everything we needed to complete our project:
- 2 Tall Glass Jars
- 1 Round Jar
- 8 Medium Sized Baskets
- Mini Self-Adhesive Hooks
- Closet Shoe Organizer
Glass Vase Pen, Pencil, and Chalk Holders
We used the glass jars to hold pens, pencils, and chalk. Their homework tabletop is a chalkboard so they can figure out math problems or write notes down on the table if needed. The kids LOVE it, but we didn’t have anywhere to keep all that chalk that kept getting lost.
I wasn’t going to spray paint the glass jars, but my daughter begged me and knew we had leftover red spray paint from a school project. So I grabbed my red spray paint and a post-it note. I cut off the sticky piece and placed it inside the glass jar while I sprayed the inside with red spraypaint. I only needed one quick coat, allowed it to dry for about 30 minutes and pulled out my post it note.
As you can see in the above picture, the kids can now see inside the one of the glass jars. Vayda wanted to be albe to tell by looking at the jars what was inside since they are tall.
We also purchased a shorter round glass fishbowl to store all the kids chalk. It works perfectly for the chalk, holds plenty of it, and you can easily see in the top and reach whatever color chalk you need.
Hanging homework/crafts baskets
I used to have baskets for each one of the girls. It worked great because they could keep all their supplies together in their basket and grab it when they were ready to start on homework or a craft project. I wanted to do something similar, but somehow attach their basket to the table when they were not being used. I found adhesive hooks that would work perfectly.
I purchased eight perfectly sized blue baskets from DollarGenral for $1/pack of two. Can’t beat the price, and they are good baskets too. Since they have nice sized holes in them, I also purchased two packages of the Mini Self Adhesive Hooks.
I was only going to put the self-adhesive hooks on the back of the table so they could hang their baskets when they were finished using them, but Vayda asked me if I could put one on the outside too. Good idea Vayda.
Not only can she use the hook on the outside of the table as a place to hang her basket out of the way when she is using it she can also use it to hang her headphones when she puts everything up at night.
The 2nd adhesive hook went in the same spot just directly behind the one on the front, and this would be where they will hang their baskets when they are finished with them each day.
Easy & Fast Kids Craft and Homework Supply Organization
Next we purchased a closet shoe organizer for all their supplies – pens, pencils, small books, small notebooks, scissors, cords to electronics being used for online learning, etc. Using the shoe organizer from Dollar General is super easy, just open it up and hang it wherever you or your child likes.
I’m going to let the girls paint it when we’re finished remodeling the sun room because that’s where the arts and craft/homework table will go when it’s all said and done.
For now I have the shoes organizer hanging on the door, but it will eventually be hung on the wall behind the table but it doesn’t matter where it is. The shoe organizer holds everything we need it to with room to spare.
So, now the kids have their workstation all set and organized. But, what about us adults? We need our own private work area and space we can enjoy. Do you have your own garage, work shop, or section of the house that is your place to get things done? Here are some great DIY Space Savers For Your Work Space! Check them out and utilize all the space and enjoy yourself, because you know the kids are too
