3 Healthy Habit Tips for Children This Fall

by Jenn Brockman

I love the fall months, the leaves begin to change color, the weather starts to cool down, and I can finally start my fall baking, lol.  I love the colors and scents that fall brings, but I also know I have to start arming my children with healthy habits especially since they are back in school.

We’re excited to be teaming up with Lysol for their Healthy Habits campaign.  They have a goal to reduce absenteeism and improve children’s performance in the classroom and beyond.  Lysol has teamed up with the one and only Football Legend and Healthy Habits Coach, Jerry Rice to garner his Healthy Habits best practices and help set our children up for success.

Twenty-Second Rule – Children, are always using their hands, and it’s important to remind them how to wash their hands properly.

Proper handwashing can help keep illness at bay, and you can teach them proper hand-washing etiquette by using the Twenty-Second Rule. Try having them sing the “Happy Birthday Song” twice from start to finished to teach them to wash their hands for a full twenty seconds.  I’ve started doing this with my children, and I now find myself singing while washing my hands.  Not only does it help ensure children are washing their hands for twenty seconds, but it also helps the time pass quicker too!  Excellent TIP!!!

2.) Make Time for Fitness – As many of you already know, fitness is important but can be difficult during the school year.  Having a busy schedule doesn’t mean you should just forget about fitness, it means you’ll have to incorporate in another way.  Lysol and Jerry Rice suggest incorporating at least one small but easy physical activity into your child’s daily routine.  Examples are – doing chores (love this one, lol), opting for a hike over video games, or you can do what we do and go for a family walk after dinner or play outside for a bit.  Some days we’ll walk further than others, and we might even stop at the park down the road, but we always try to make at least a trip around the block together.

3.) Rest Up
– Naturally, sleep is important, but so is a consistent sleep schedule.  Children should get about 8 to 10 hours of sleep nightly to make sure they are well rested for their busy day at school.

Lysol has also partnered with the National Education Association and National Parent Teacher Association with health messages from the CDC, to launch the Healthy Habits Program.  Through their work together they have developed some awesome materials to help educate students on proper hand washing as well as other techniques to help keep from spreading germs and reduce sick days.  Teachers can find the Healthy Habits lesson plans at Lysol.com/HealthyHabits.

I love Lysol, especially their handy-dandy wipes!  If it fit in my handbag, I would without a doubt take them with me everywhere lol.  As you can see, they don’t fit which is why I’m glad Lysol also has their handy-dandy To Go Spray.  It fits perfectly in my handbag and is there when I need it, which is all the time, especially this time of year!

Lysol wants to reward teachers who are not only teaching but practicing Healthy Habits in their classroom – encourage hand washing before lunch, maybe they have a cover your sneeze policy, or they might practice Healthy Habits in other ways.

To participate in the Healthy Habits contest, all they have to do is submit a short video sharing how they are incorporating Healthy Habits in their classroom.  Entries will be accepted until October 15, 2016, and the videos with the most votes could win gift cards for classroom supplies.  You can learn more by visiting Lysol.com/HealthyHabitsContest or head over and submit your video here.
