5 Ways to Maximize Space in Your Bathroom

by Jenn Brockman

Your bathroom gets a lot of use, making it one of the most important areas of your home. If you have a small bathroom, you may constantly find yourself fighting other family members for the sink or shower, or you may feel smothered by the amount of toiletries and towels in the bathroom.

5 Ways to Maximize Space in Your Bathroom5 Ways to Maximize Space in Your Bathroom

Luckily, even the smallest of bathrooms can feel bigger. There are plenty of steps you can take, products you can buy, and tips you can use in order to maximize space in your bathroom, and the following information will provide you with everything you need to know.

  1. Clean and Organize

Before you do anything else, the very first thing you need to do in order to maximize space is to clean and organize your bathroom. Take this time to go through your bathroom vanity, closets, and any other area of the room that has acquired stuff, and go through it. Be sure you purge anything you no longer need, such as that expired box of allergy medicine or that rusting bottle of hairspray.

Once you’ve thrown away everything you can, start to organize your items. Put all hair products together, all soaps together, all medicine together, etc. Then, find a place for everything. Use bins and baskets in order to keep everything organized, especially in your bathroom vanity and closet. By getting rid of items you no longer need, and by organizing the items you do, you’ll be able to better maximize your space.

  1. Shelves

If you have a small bathroom, adding in another bulky item next to your bathroom vanity may be impossible, and that’s okay. There are other ways to gain space in your bathroom, and shelves are a great option. If you have bulky organizers or too full closets, add some shelves for support. You can place towels on shelves, everyday toiletries such as cotton balls and/or q-tips, and anything else you can think of. Placing these items in clear jars or containers will make your bathroom appear more organized while also giving you some room in drawers and cabinets.

When it comes to hanging shelves in your bathroom, think outside the box. For example, don’t just place shelves in the most obvious area. Instead, look around and see what you can use. Placing shelves high, such as above the door or close to the ceiling, gives you more storage space for items you don’t need often, such as extra guest towels or toiletries.

If you have a closet in your bathroom, look and see if you can add more shelf space inside the closet too. This will allow you to store more items in there in a more organized fashion, which will allow you to get some items out of sight.

  1. Downsize

Many bathrooms seem small because they contain oversized items. If you have a bulky bathroom vanity, for example, downsize to a small bathroom vanity table instead. These options ditch the traditional large cabinets and instead open up your bathroom by using shelves. This creates an open feel, which often allows you to see the floor and creates the illusion that your bathroom is bigger.

Aside from your vanity, you should also look for other areas to downsize. For example, if you have a large hamper in your bathroom, replace it with something smaller, or try to find another area of your home to house the hamper, such as the laundry room.

  1. Recessed Cubbies

If you’re afraid that using shelving or baskets will make the room look more cluttered, consider going inside the wall instead of outside of it. For example, you can install recessed shelving inside your wall between two studs. This will give you more space to use for your bathroom without extending anything out onto the floor. One good place to put a recessed shelving unit is close to the bathroom vanity, which will allow you to store your necessities in a more organized and more attractive fashion.

  1. Caddies

If you have one main bathroom for your entire family, the shower and tub can be the most unorganized and cluttered part of the room. Thankfully, this can easily be remedied. Invest in a few shower/tub caddies and use them. This will allow you to better organize your shampoos, soaps, and other shower necessities. Plus, if you have the space, buy each person in your house their own caddy for their own items. Then, either hang them in the shower using command strips or knobs, or place them in the closet. This will eliminate clutter in your bathroom and allow you to maximize space.
