12 Fun Things To Do In Holland! Be sure to plan on visiting Amsterdam

by Jenn Brockman

There is nothing that I enjoy more than traveling, experiencing things I have never done, seeing places I have never seen, and meeting people with a completely different lifestyle than what I’m used to.  When you think about things to do in Holland, or visiting Amsterdam to you think of things like tulips, windmills, and clogs?  Amsterdam is the Dutch capital and has so much more going on than just tulips, windmills and clogs in Holland.  If you have been looking for some fun things to do in Holland, I have limited this post to twelve things to do in Holland.  There are tons of things, places, and activities to see and do, this is just for starters and I hope it gives you great ideas for your vacation in Holland.

Tulips:  I’m sure many of you already know that Holland is known for their beautiful tulips.  If you’re ever in Holland in April and May stop by the Dutch tulip fields and see the millions of tulips in bloom.  Keukenhof has more than 7 million flower bulbs planted each yea.  So I am sure you can imagine it’s amazing.  The perfumes from the tulips, daffodils, roses, irises, lilies and other beautiful flowers has to be amazing.

Van Gogh Museum: The Van Gogh Museum reopened their doors on May 1, 2013!  They have a very special exhibition in honor of reopening their doors.  It’s the museums 40th anniversary.

Warren Sea in HollandWadden Sea:  In 2009 the Wadden Seas was declared a World Heritage Site.  It’s best viewed from above, so you can see the amazing artwork of the winding channels that are always branching off and changing.  The Wadden Sea continues to change due to Mother Nature.

The Mills of Kinderdijk: Holland isn’t complete with windmills.  The windmills at Kinderdijk were built around 1740.  Nobody should leave Holland without a picture from The Mills of Kinderdijk.

A trip to Holland just wouldn’t be complete without a visiting Amsterdam.  Here’s a few things that you’re going to want to put on your to-do list if you’re traveling to Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Canals Musts: Amsterdam is known for its beautiful, unique canals.  Be sure to visit one of Amsterdam’s Canal Tours and enjoy the beautiful of the canal houses, more than fifteen bridges, and be on the lookout for the Megare Brug (Skinny Bridge).

Markets of Amsterdam: Be sure to check out the Markets of Amsterdam.  You will find plenty of great souvenirs to remember your Holland vacation.  On Queen’s Day you will find thousands of free markets in the Netherlands.   If you enjoy shopping be sure to check out some of the Markets of Amsterdam.

Vondelpark: Another fabulous place you will find in Amsterdam is Vondelpark.  Walk down the winding paths, visit the beautiful rose garden and ponds, have some tea or a bite to eat, there is plenty to do at Vondelpark.

Houseboats in the Amsterdam Canals: Did you know that Amsterdam is home to about 2500 houseboats?  WOW, be sure to check out the historical canals that some people call home.  You can also take a canal tour and see Amsterdam from the water.  Did you know you can stay in a houseboat while you’re in Amsterdam and Utecht?  Something to think about if you’re planning on a vacation in Amsterdam.

Artis Royal Zoo:  If you enjoy learning about animals the Artis Royal Zoon in Amsterdam is home to 750 different species of animals.  You will find animals such as: Elephants, chips, fish of all colors, zebras, gazelles and more.  You can also get a good ideas of what kind of animals live inthe canals you’ve been floating on.

Kozzi-bike-on-park-in-amsterdam-441 X 294Take a Bike Ride: If you’re traveling in Amsterdam you cannot leave without a bike right.  If you visit Holland you will see bicycle paths everywhere you go.  You can rent bikes almost anywhere, but remember to follow the rules.  If you are biking to the Amsterdam Central Station be prepared to see a bike ramp that can hold 7000 bikes.

Madame Tussauds: Mingle with the rich and famous while you’re in Amsterdam.  You will find wax figures of internationally famous people such as: Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Ronaldinho, and many more.  You can also expect that your visit to Madame Tusauds will be interactive and fun.  Be sure to bring you camera, you’re not going to want to forget that.  You can take pictures with the rich and famous.

Coffee shops of Amsterdam: Amsterdam is known for its coffee ships.  Did you know there is currently more than 200 coffee shops located in Amsterdam?

If you’re planning on vacation to Holland there is plenty to do, and loads of history to soak up and experience.  A vacation to Holland wouldn’t be complete without visiting Amsterdam.  I hope you have found a few fun things to do in Holland from this post.  If you know of any other awesome things people should experience while in Holland please feel free to leave a comment with your feedback, I would love to hear them.

Nice work Jenn. When in Amsterdam i will definitely go for a bicycle ride and visit a coffee shop. One more offbeat place i would like to visit which is for someone who loves art. Fluorescent art museum http://goo.gl/CfSq8 is the world only museum of its kind where visitors can also participate and be a part of the art. I would definitely like to try this art on me 🙂

the “coffee” shops are actually places to buy and smoke weed which is why they are ever-so-popular

I found you through G+

You’ve made a super list of things to do in Holland, Jenn. One other great thing about Amsterdam is that it is so easy to get to other interesting places once you’ve finished your tour. For example, you can easily hop to Belgium and see beautiful Bruges, or go the other way and visit Cologne in Germany. Or even hop on the Eurostar and get to London, via the Channel Tunnel!

Of the items on your list, I especially want to see the tulips and the windmills. I’m not a coffee fan; but falafel is another matter. A couple of the falafel shops here are patterned after the falafel shops in Amsterdam. Since I could eat falafel everyday, I would visit as many falafel shops in Amsterdam as possible.

I would love to go to Holland and see the amazing display of tulips, and I did not know that the Van Gough museum is there. That sounds like a very interesting museum to go to. And so many people live on houseboats. I wonder if I could get used to the swaying of a boat, and live on it. Holland would be a great place to visit!

No doubt Amsterdam is Awesome. One thing when traveling is always check the weather before booking. Climate when traveling abroad is always different. So many people book during rainy seasons
