Yes, I Really Did Have a Pet Deer That Thought She Was a Dog!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Purina. All opinions are 100% mine.

I have always been an animal lover.  Ever since I was little we have had dogs, cats, chicken, ducks, horse, cows, goats, and even a deer.  Yes, a deer!  My dad found it on his morning drive into the mountains of Ruidoso, NM.  Poor little thing was almost dead, but we nursed it back to life and loved it like part of the family.  It’s really funny, she thought she was a dog for the longest time.  Our intention was never to keep her, but keep her until she eventually ran into other deer and she found her natural wild self.

That never happened, she was taken from us for chasing a car.  I told you she thought she was a dog, lol.  The sheriff’s department released her into the wild, but she came back.  It took her a week, but she found her way home.  Someone told the sheriff’s department and rather than letting her do her thing they placed her in a zoo.  I remember how heartbroken I was, she was supposed to be wild.  Not trapped in a zoo, and you know she would have eventually gone too.  She was already headed in that direction.

Ever since I was little I have loved animals of all shapes and sizes.  We currently have four dogs.  If you follow often you know they are:

  1. Skittles the super sweet pit-bull that lets the girls dress him up in dresses.  You can see he hates it, but if it makes the kids happy he will do it.
  2. Piper the yellow lab, man she is dingy.  So sweet I don’t know if she is smart enough to know how to be mean.
  3. Noodles the Rotty, now talk about dumb.  Yes, she sure is but she is the sweetest, biggest baby you will ever meet.  One look into her little eyes and she has stolen your heart.
  4. Sweetie Belle is all about my daughter Vayda.  She is the newest edition, and is all about Vayda.  Anything that makes Vayda happy makes her happy.

With such amazing animals comes responsibility for the whole family.  We have to take care of our pups that we love so much.  We treat our pups like family.

This story reminds me of childhood. We had a pet goat that was “adopted” by our dogs when it was only a few weeks old. It was a very rural area and they roamed the neighborhood together.

I would love to have a deer as a pet! Sad that he was taken from you, though. My kids and I all love animals and we’ve done many animal rescues over the years. When an animal gets dropped off in my neighborhood, they always seem to know to come to our house! Two weeks ago, we found a puppy at our door, nobody in the neighborhood knew her and She had 47 ticks on her! I put our ads and posters, nobody claimed her. We weren’t allowed to keep her here, we can only keep one pet and I’ve got a cat. I did keep her, though, until I could find her a home. She’s got a great, loving home now where she’s very loved :)

This is such a cute story. I love the fact that you and your family nursed the deer back to health and found it so funny that she thought she was a dog how adorable is that? I was never aware of Walmart having the Purina Pet Park Showcase but now that I read this post I am definitely going to check it out. Thank you for this story and for the information.

I love animals too but at this time I have none because I live with my 85 year old mother who don’t like animals. Now my daughter has 3 cats, 1 dog, 1 turtle, 2 fish, 1 hamster, 1 sand crab and a lizard and 3 kids. She stays busy cleaning up and feeding all kids and animals.

LOL, I was digging and digging for our picture with the deer infront of the Christmas tree but I forgot it’s in storage until we’re done building on… boo

That’s a great story. I’ve always been around lots of animals too. When I was a child, I lived on a farm. I made pets of pigs, cows, chickens, mules, ducks-anything that we had or found. It sure was fun.

What a cute story. I do believe that animals know when they’re loved and put up with “their” people. Don’t you wonder what goes through their minds when they see us.
