Bloggers, Brands, and anyone else with a Facebook Page have you been losing Facebook Likes lately? I have not noticed that I have lost to many “likes”, but I have a lot going on. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track. However, I read others speaking out, everyone seems to be losing Facebook fans like crazy. I have heard it enough that I finally decided to see what in the world is going on. Like many of you I have heard about Faceook’s “pre-spring cleaning” efforts.
First we will go over what we already know Facebook is doing. Some of you might not be aware of their early “spring cleaning”.
Over the last month Facebook has been working on “pre-spring cleaning” a little early, getting rid of all those spam pages. On August 31, 2012 they posted – Improvements To Our Site Integrity System. If you have not stopped by to read it, I suggest doing so. It explains a lot about what’s going on with these so called “improvements”.
They are removing “likes”, that have not come from someone who is truly interested in connecting with you page. If you have violated the Facebook terms to gain “likes” on your page, it’s likely you’re feeling it.
Likes gained by malware, compromised accounts, deceived users, and yes even purchased likes will be removed. Yes, there are people who really buy Facebook “Likes”, as crazy as it sounds it happens.
So in the ends, it’s actually a good thing. Being a blogger I want legit likes to follow me, ones that get involved and don’t post anything spam related. After all we all want “real” fans right? I know I sure do, but I have one issue…
Explain this….. In the last month I have seen a decrease of 504 “likes” on my Facebook page, sadly 202 of those were friends and family. From one second to the next, I and many other bloggers saw a HUGE decrease in the number of friend that like our page. I don’t want spammers following my page, but I DO WANT MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS, ALONG WITH ALL THE READ FANS I’M SURE I LOST. Needless to say, I am a little peeved about losing Facebook fans that I know are real, legit likes.
I’m all about improvements and making Facebook a better environment Getting ride of spammers and those that purchase likes in bulk. Please Facebook take those likes away, just leave the real ones! I have hope that Facebook will give us our legit likes back, it’s probably very unlikely but I like to think they will do the ethical things and see that it happens.
How are you feeling about Facebook’s efforts to “clean up”? Are you losing friend likes as well? I have noticed that 58 seems to be some type of magic number. Several other pages that I have visited only have 58 friend likes as well.

Maybe they are going to limit everyone to 58 likes
Seems a little odd…
That’s crazy! I don’t have a page but I can understand your frustration. It would seem like Facebook would at least send you some kind of verification where you could let them know who is legit. I’m sure you could give more insight as to some not being real fans instead of them just assuming. They don’t mind sending you an email telling you what you can’t do they should be able to email you and at least get some info from you about certain people that you are familiar with. Especially family and friends. I just don’t think that’s fair to you guys in the least.
AGREED! It’s not fair, to anyone it’s crap get rid of the spam but why my mom?
That is crazy! I’m glad they are going after the spammer’s though, but to go after and remove legitimate people’s likes on a page is ridiculous!
AGREED!
i think it is crazy how facebook can take it upon themselves to take likes, i am just a normal every day facebook user and i like almost the limit on an every day basis but i now only like about 2300, i gues they did my cleaning up for me, not fair because now i miss stuff i want to see.
wow, this is good to know! They are removing your likes….. wow, this is just cray and not fair! Thanks for letting me know
from the other end of the equation—–i’ve spent the morning entering giveaways. several pages that i KNOW i have previously liked aren’t liked now.. i didn’t “unlike” anyone. it makes me wonder what this problem may “cost” me. will bloggers think i’m cheating? it’s not just the “pages” being affected. it’s the fans as well.
Judy at this point, I dont think they will….. I know we are all worried about what is going on it doesn’t seem fair or right… all we can do is hope they get this figured out ASAP… I don’t think any decent blogger would hold that against you… also, we get used to who visit our blog regularly which helps too… I know I sure wouldn’t hold it against you, not right now..
I know nothing about facebook period.I don’t use that or twitter. Hope they get it straightened out!
I know I have been “unliking”a lot of blogs that I don’t read much lately because I enter these blog contests that ask me to “like” everyone and their uncles to get maximum # of entries, many of whom I won’t follow anyway, because a] they’re uninteresting and b] I can get the same info & more from your blog
So when I’m notified that I’ve reached a max of 5,000 likes, I have to delete some to enter others.. kwim? But no worries from this reader. I may not always post but I enjoy your input on a lot of subjects. Thanks
Hey Mikki Cross thanks so much, and I totally understand where you are coming from…. I like to say shame on Fb for limitin the number of likes we are allowed to have but 5000 is a lot…. however, I can think of 5000 things I like might not read daily or weekly but would like to see them in my newsfeed you know…. either way, I had my mom unlike my FB page and I just don’t think that happened actually I know it did not happen… which makes me wonder why in the world she doesnt like my page…..
I am glad to see you enjoy old blah blah here, and super excited to read your comments all the time.. thanks so much for your feedback, I know there was a limit but wasn’t sure what it was.
I didn’t know about this. The 58 family and friend likes issue sounds very strange. What could possibly be the reason behind that?
What is going on with FB. I haven’t been able to Like a site for monthes. I keep getting the message that I have 5000 likes already so can’t have any more. I went in my profile and there is no way I have that many. I only like about 300 pages. I am thinking that they are couinting the posts I like as well. ,I can’t fingure it oit.
WOW Deanna I would email them for sure… don’t know how well that will go over but it’s worth a shot..
So far they haven’t removed any of my likes as a facebook user michelle warner. Mine are at 5000+ but I’m sure they’ll get to me sometime and when they do I will be liking them again. I keep all my emails from my blogger families and I will be making sure that they get liked again! Don’t worry Jenn they can’t keep me away!!! Love your blog and page! Challenge me Facebook! The war has just begun!!!
YOU FREAKING ROCK GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS SOOOOOOO MUCH!
That is really unfair. How come big name companies can have millions of Likes but if a blogger has “too many” then his/her Likes must be fake? I understand if it’s a spammer or someone who hasn’t logged on in two years but I don’t understand how they can decipher real fans from fake fans. Family members are obviously real fans. I feel like it has something to do with money. Ohhh Facebook…
YES, I think in the end it’s all about money I couldn’t agree more…
Now that facebook is doing this, everytime they do something there ends up being problems, but anyways I have been entering a lot of the different blogs contests and because I do not have very many followers I cannot follow anymore on Twitter. I read the rules and cancelled out people I really did not need, but I get a lot of great info from your blogs (and others) so I guess I do not understand the whole limit thing if it is not related to money someway. Thanks for everything you do and help us understand all the other fun things you have to put up with.
Thanks Laura and I totally agree about the whole limit thing its our newsfeed and I agree I love the info found on blogs… Thank you so much for your great comment!
That is so weird. How can someone BUY likes anyhow? How can they invent fake people to just like their blog too? That is so juvenile, like having a “slam book” in jr high and filling it all out by yourself, and forging the COOL girls and guys names in it!! Stupid lazy liars. They are jealous of genuine people liking other genuine people.!!! Dora
I know right seems pretty crazy that someone would spend so much money buying likes… wow, but it happens… sadly! Agree!
If it weren’t for blogs & pages like yours, I would’ve left Facebook a LONG time ago. It is boring to just say, “Hi, my cat coughed up a really gross hairball today, he played with it too” (Hey I do have cats, I LOVE them, but it does get old talking about ONLY them) We get SO much info from blogs & pages! Games, recipes, new friends, and well, its just fun!!
YOU ROCK YOU KNOW THAT!!!!! It’s people like you that keep us going… and I totally agree 100%! Thank you so much for such an awesome comment… I love the hairball and it’s so true! what a boring day that would be lol..
Another thought. I had made an account after many of my friends and family complained about my “likes”. After using this for a while, I realized that it was a violation of terms…so I stopped using that account. Perhaps others who use two different accounts were some of those people who “liked” you. I know it doesn’t account for all of them, but it might for a few.
Thanks for your input, I love hearing everyones feedback…. I am still confused as to why my mom no longer likes my page..
Thanks for your input, I love hearing everyone feedback…. I am still confused as to why my mom no longer likes my page..
Love, love , love your blog! It is one of my favorites. I am puzzled by all of this as well. I was unaware of all the “Spring Cleaning” F/B is doing. I know that I have had to re-add a couple of my family members who I had friended, as well as add they were family. I wasn’t aware of a number of “likes” you’re limited to. But if F/B is really wanting to do Spring Cleaning… I am disaabled and could use all of the help they can spare!! lol .
I haven’t lost too many (at least I don’t think so) but since I’m running a giveaway now I can’t be sure. I agree false likes or bought likes are wrong but all the “upgrades” are making it really tough to keep a “fan page” and I’m sure it hurting advertiser/blogger interaction (I’m still too small for many)
What? I had NO idea! I have been on for about 4 years or so. Lots of blogs I have “liked” and still keep on but truly, there is NO way I can keep up on over 5K of those I follow. I am thinking of doing my own spring cleaning. I don’t comment a lot, mostly with family and friends. But I do like really reading my favorite blogger posts! Some I have found to be so genuine and fun, and have a special quality that the other kazillion bloggers might not have. I do find though, that most bloggers do not follow back on facebook or twitter. And it is not that they have maxed out on their numbers either. Sometimes less is more, even I suppose with bloggers. Most know that a lot of people are there to get info for saving money, coupons, or for giveaways…if they are honest. I do love the personal posts too and photo’s. For me, it is about connecting with others too. Those sponsors that work with bloggers HAVE to know by now that numbers do not mean quality or that EVERY one of those readers are actually tuning IN on those blogs and reading about those products every. single. day. I try to get to about 30 or so blogs at a time. Then “round robin’ and come back to them, or many times a post by email will catch my attention and I will stop on a dime to read it. Good luck figuring this out…you will be fine. It’s NOT all about numbers…well, it sure SHOULDn’t be IMO.
Eileen, agreed and thanks for you awesome post! really made me stop and think, it’s not really about number… I think I am just a little ticked about facebook they jsut suck, lol… Really thanks so much, I’m really happy you left me this comment… think I need to stop and think about it like that!
Thank you for this great artible!
I’ve had about 50 unlikes in less than a week! and I’ve been going crazy thinking that people weren’t enjoying my blog anymore.
Maybe this explains a lot!
I’m so glad you posted on this because I haven’t been able to move past 7750 likes in like 2 months because every time I get new likes, some disappear. So, what is the solution?
Interesting article. We have seen a lot of “likes” drop away a few each week or month for the past year – almost 25% have been removed even though we get some new ones each month. It sounds like a lot of people have the same problem. And yet, FB asks you to buy ads with them so you can get more “likes”-how hypocritical is that! I have recently been very active on Google+ just to be diversified and now I am glad I did. The big G is not any picnic with all the patient reviews they have lost or misplaced for us over the last 2 years. I am not sure that there is any really good answer to any of it. However, I did enjoy your article and I don’t feel quite so “targeted” as before reading your article. I understand the need to control spam, because I get a lot of spam followers on our Twitter account – something like: joye1, joye2, joye3 ect. which are obvious spam. I have delete many of these as well as some on our FB page as well. Thanks for the great article. I hope to read any new comments posted here.
PS – you have the coolest cursive letters that I have ever seen on a blog.
Dr Gil recently posted..Seattle Met Magazine Top Dentists 2013 Selections for Dr Cynthia Pauley and Dr Brian Cave at Brookside Dental Bellevue WA
Thanks I love those letters…. and I’m begining to think Facebook sucks lol… I think we are all feeling it, not sure why or what is going on but I think it would be wise of everyone to explore other networks…
I have also faced this problem. I dont know why this shit happen. But, every month I am loosing fb likes. Though, I get new fans, bu where does the old fan go !!!
