Grocery shopping with kids, ha that is anything but an adventure. If my daughter is in a bad mood, or I don’t play my cards right it’s extremely unpleasant.
As a mother of four, one of the trips I look forward to the most is a solo adventure to the grocery store to carefully get everything I need for dinner, the week, and the month, whatever –it’s quite and mom can think. Oh, I can also chat with all my buddies that I run into, and not hear “mom what are you doing, I am board, and need to go pee.” My daughter always needs to pee, then when we get to the bathroom, oh she magically doesn’t have to. Nope she wanted to come and mess around in the bathroom lol. It’s a rare occasion that I venture off to the store alone, much less an awesome sale like the Albertson Stock Up Sale!
So how do us parents go grocery shopping with kids, or even worse taking your toddler to the grocery shopping alone. It’s always easier for mine when she has her siblings to talk to lol.
If you have not mastered grocery shopping with kids yet, welcome to the club. I don’t know if we can ever master it, but there are things we can do to help. Here are a few of my tricks to grocery shopping with kids.
Tips To Grocery Shopping With Kids!
Pre-plan, and don’t forget it at home – Your list, make it and don’t forget it. This will help you you’re your kids start acting up, put your head down, and focus on the list! Get things from the list, don’t venture away from the list, bad things happen when you do that, or it does to me anyway. Those are the trip when I get everything but what I needed, and now we are broke lol.
Feed those little buggers – Yes, feed your kids if you are lucky you can put them under the basket and they will pass out, lol. NO do not put them under the basket, especially if you need to pick up kitty food, or dog food. When kids go to the store not hungry, they don’t ask for everything in sight. It’s the same when you visit the grocery store hungry. Everything looks good, so we buy more. Eat lunch them go.
Have a game plan – Go from one side of the store to the other, rather than back and forth down the isles. It’s fater and less tempting for everyone involved.
Loosen Up – If you are crabby and uptight, than your kids will follow your mood. Have fun, smile, let your kids try on Halloween hats, lol. Whatever just have fun, smile. Remember your kids are only little once.
Talk to your kids before entering the grocery store – Set expectations before entering the grocery store with kids. If they know what mommy is expecting, they have eaten lunch, its likely they will be in a good mood. My fingers are crossed for you, lol.
Play games – My toddler and I have actually started having fun playing “I spy with my little eye” in the grocery store. Its loads of fun, now the only think that I need to worry about is why everyone is giving us crazy looks at the Albertson Stock Up Sale… Sure we were loud, but it was a blast!
Plan for Sales – I always bring along my tablet when I am shopping at awesome sales. We have been shopping at Albertsons for their Stock Up Sale, bringing along a tablet for my kid to watch movies on, or play games with has been amazing. I’m able to focus on my sale shopping, and she is happy too!
Older kids going to practice math – I always make my daughter Vayda be my calculator, and it’s great for her math skills. She tracks how much we are spending on her little notebook, I check it on my phone, lol. NO not really I don’t, I do it in my head to look smart and just round-up to the nearest dollar, but don’t tell her lol. Regardless she has a whole lot of fun, her hands are busy, and she is so busy learning math she doesn’t have time to drive mom bonkers.
Self-scan if you can – Get the kids to helping. It’s been my experience kids waiting on a cashier can be bad, they do flips on those little rail things, maybe fall, kick someone. Yes, it’s happened too many times, I always self-scan so I can involve my kids when possible, and when not I talk to my kids before we get up there.
Check your mood at the door – If I am having issues with one of my kids having an attitude. I stop at the front door and ask them to please check their mood at the door or we cannot enter, lol. At least they smile because they think their mom is a total nut, what they do not realize is they made me this way… Either way they are in a better mood, which means better Stock Up Sale shopping for me!
