How to print a T-Shirt

Printing your own t-shirts is a great way to advertise your business, musical group, or other entity.  The bonus of doing your own t-shirt printing is that you get the personal touch that is just not possible with a mass-produced garment.  There are several ways to go about t shirt printing, and one of the most popular of these is DTG printing, which is short for Direct to Garment Printing.  The benefit of using this type of industrial method, rather than using hand methods like screen printing, is that the end result will look cleaner.  If you intend to create multiple copies of your t-shirt, then the DTG method is even more beneficial, since it is more consistent than any handmade method could ever be.

The first step with DTG printing is to choose the graphic and text that you want on the t-shirt.  This is the area where you can get creative, and really figure out what the message is that you are trying to convey.  Almost anything goes with regard to art on t-shirts, as long as it is not offensive.  There are many styles from which to choose.  You can have a picture with no text, or text without a picture.  DTG printing utilises inkjet technology, and the full spectrum of colours is available to you.  If you want a classic look to your t-shirt design, then it might be worth thinking about making your shirt black and white.  You can stylise the picture or the text in any way you choose.  The question of whether just one side, or both sides, of the t-shirt is being printed on is also important.  Asking yourself such questions is a big help in defining the characteristics of your t-shirt design.

Because of the cost of DTG printers, in order to make t-shirts with DTG printing you will first have to find a retailer that offers this service for a price that suits you.  Once this goal has been achieved, you need to explain the idea for your t-shirt design as clearly as possible.  This is why once you have come up with the design, it is crucial to put the graphic and text into some sort of digital form for t-shirt printing.  At this juncture you need to be able to go beyond vague ideas, and be able to pinpoint what it is you want your shirt to say and look like.  If you are unable to do this, you run the risk of the shirt not turning out the way you want it to.  If it is a run of multiple t-shirts that you are looking for, it never hurts to ask for a sample printing first, so that you can have an example of what the finished product will look like.

DTG t-shirt printing is not all that difficult when you know of a reliable source for it.  Although the cost may vary from retailer to retailer, custom t-shirts created through DTG printing tend not to be overly expensive.
