6 Tips To Help Keep Kids Safe While Riding a Bike

As a parent I want my kids to play outside, and ride their bikes, but I also want to do everything I can to be sure my kids are safe while riding a bike.  We recently had a few nice days this winter, and the first things the kids wanted to do was pull their bikes out of the garage, and try out the new Spokester Bike Noisemakers we got.  Spokesters are an awesome tool for helping parents keep their kids safe while they ride their bike, while the kids have fun with the sound it makes.  I love learning about more ways to keep my kids safe while they are riding their bikes.

Helmet – Growing up I didn’t wear a helmet, but I also grew up in the country, riding on dirt roads, and there was hardly ever any traffic.  I understand my children don’t like helmets, and a lot of their friends don’t wear them.  Which makes it harder to explain the importance of helmet wearing.  I have heard it all, “Mom Timmy’s mom doesn’t make him wear a helmet.”  “Mom I will be fine, nothing is going to happen.”  “Mom I will stay on the sidewalk.”  “The other kids will make fun of me.”  Sorry, but if you’re a child of mine you will be wearing a helmet made for biking, and that’s just that.  Sure you’re a great bike rider, and it’s not you that I don’t trust, it’s the 76 cars that are going to pass by while you are on the sidewalk riding your bike.

Clothing – Kids should wear bright-colored clothing while riding their bikes.  It will help make them more visible to people driving.  Avoid loose-fitting clothing that can get caught in moving part of the bike, and be sure to wear shoes that cover feet.  Flip-flops are a no-no!  Trust me, I learned the hard way.

Bike – Be sure your child is riding a bike that fits them.  Bikes come in so many different shapes, colors, styles, and sizes it’s important to choose a bike that fits your child.

Teach Good Habits – Teach your child how to be a responsible bike rider.  The more they know, the better off they are, and the more they will be aware of their surroundings.

Supervision – Proper supervision is the most important, and starts the moment you walk out the door.  Be sure your children have all the needed equipment, are mature enough to be riding, bike is properly functioning, fits properly, and they are riding safely.

Accessories – There are some great accessories you can buy for your kids bike that help make them more noticeable to traffic.  Reflectors are great if they are going to be riding when it’s getting dark outside, and Spokester makes Bicycle Noisemakers that are pretty awesome too.

Spokester’s are super easy to install, you don’t need any tools or special equipment.  All that’s needed is your hands, and a bike.  I installed my daughters in about a minute, and didn’t even ask my husband for help, lol.  I admit, I’m spoiled.  Normally with something like this I have my husband do it, but adding Spokester’s to my daughters bike was super easy.

They are super easy to use, I didn’t even have to get my husband to help me!  Yup, that’s pretty easy, lol.  Simply snap the tube section around the front bike fork with the flat-paddle part facing inward.  That’s seriously it.

My kids love that they sound like a motorcycle buzzing down the road, and I’m glad people are able to hear them.  It makes me feel safer knowing there is some type of noise for people to notice.

My youngest daughter wants a set of Spokester’s like her older sister, lol.  Which is great because, since putting them on my daughter’s bike she has been asking to ride her bike as soon as she gets home from school, lol.  She and the neighborhood kids now have a new game, and Vayda is a motorcycle cop, who is out to catch the bad guy’s lol.  It’s fun to see the kids coming up with new games to play on their bikes, and takeing advantage of the few nice days we have had.
